In multi-family dwellings like condominiums, quick and easy access to the main water shutoff is crucial for preventing catastrophic water damage. We recently performed a vital renovation project in a Tucson, AZ condo, focusing on upgrading and relocating the main water service emergency shutoff control to ensure homeowner safety and accessibility.
The Problem: Hidden and Inaccessible Shutoff
The main water service emergency shutoff control, which serves the entire condo unit, was poorly situated. It was located deep within the wall cavity, behind the water heater, making it difficult, if not impossible, for the homeowner or residents to quickly access in a true water emergency (such as a burst pipe or flooding appliance).
To address this hidden hazard, we first had to open the interior drywall above the existing water heater to gain necessary access to the existing plumbing.
The Solution: Copper Piping and Easy-Access Lever Control
Once the pipe was exposed, our focus was to renovate the system for maximum reliability and ease of use.
- Copper Pipe Renovation: We renovated the existing copper water pipe to ensure a solid, leak-free connection for the new valve. Copper is an excellent material choice for interior water lines due to its durability and resistance to corrosion.
- External Lever Handle: The most important functional change was bringing the new lever handle emergency shutoff control out of the wall. We installed a reliable, modern lever handle ball valve. Unlike older gate valves that can seize up, a lever handle allows for an instant, easy quarter-turn shutoff of the water supply. Placing it outside of the wall ensures easy access by the homeowner or residents in case of emergency, minimizing response time and potential damage.
After securely installing the new valve and making all necessary plumbing connections, we thoroughly tested for function and leaks to guarantee the new shutoff control was working perfectly and leak-free.
Final Restoration
With the plumbing complete and tested, the final step was restoration. We reset the drywall that was removed for access, leaving a clean, secured surface that was ready for the texture of the wall and subsequent painting by the client.
This renovation significantly improved the safety and functionality of the condo’s plumbing system, turning a hidden risk into a clearly accessible control point.
Do you have an inaccessible or aging water shutoff valve in your Tucson home or condo? Upgrading to an external lever handle can save you thousands in water damage during a plumbing emergency.
